Future of Rwandan Weightlifting Brightens at Genocide Memorial Competition
The Rwandan Federation of Weightlifting & Powerlifting (FEDERATION RWANDAISE D’HALTEROPHILIE & FORCE) organized the Strongman Genocide Memorial Tournament, a special competition to remember athletes who died in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. This event also aimed to encourage young athletes to improve in weightlifting and powerlifting.
The competition included different categories like squat, deadlift, bench press, and strongman (snatch – clean & jerk). It took place in three locations: KT Fitness Center on June 2nd, Kigali Heights on June 9th, and Fitness Point on June 16th, 2024.
Niyonzima Jean Claude won first place in
the tournament by winning two categories: Deadlift and Bench Press. His success
showed his hard work and skill.
The athletes were trained by Ntare
Rwamugereka Jimmy, the only Rwandan who has competed in the Strongman
International Competition. He taught and encouraged the athletes, urging them
to work hard so that Rwanda can have more athletes competing internationally.
The athletes were happy with the federation
for giving them the chance to show their talents and make Rwanda proud. The
Strongman Genocide Memorial Tournament was not just a competition; it was a way
to honor the past and inspire the future of weightlifting and powerlifting in
Rwanda.
With the federation's support, the future
of these sports in Rwanda looks bright. The event was a success in remembering
the past and motivating young athletes to aim high and achieve great things.
